This implies a huge surge in the number of data centres, servers, computers, telecommunication equipment and other sensitive electronic equipment over the past few decades. Even smaller businesses, hospitals and schools have electronic equipment and data storage requirements.

In addition to the danger to human lives, Lightning also poses a significant danger to this sensitive equipment which can be easily disrupted due to the electrical surges caused by lightning. Structural External Lightning Protection may protect the building and its inhabitants from lightning but it will not protect the electronic equipment inside from a transient overvoltage. To protect this sensitive equipment, we require another layer of Lightning Protection called Internal Lightning Protection which involves Surge Protection Devices (SPD’s) and Equipotential Bonding.

Why is lightning protection in buildings so important in India?

The external and internal lightning protection systems work together to intercept the lightning, conduct it to the earth and finally disperse the current into the earth.
