Scope

The grounding or earthing of electrical systems in the earth is known as earthing. An earthing system in an electricity supply system defines the electrical potential of the conductors concerning the earth's conductive surface. An earthing system in an electricity supply system defines the electrical potential of the conductors concerning the Earth's conductive surface. If the necessary earthing of any electrical equipment is not accessible, it may fail, posing a risk to human life if it comes into touch with it.

 

Technical Aspects of CCPE

If any electrical equipment does not have sufficient earthing, it may fail, posing a risk to human life if it comes into touch with fault currents. Any electrical circuit's maximum short circuit current is determined by the transformer's capacity and the type of load, which can range in thousands of amperes.

Current ratings of nearly 21kA are the short circuit capacity of a 1000kVA transformer. However, only a few amperes of current are required to cause human death. As a result, for the safe discharge of fault currents, good and permanent efficient earthing is necessary.

Chemically Charged Rod Electrodes are made up of galvanised or copper-bonded steel pipes filled with Crystalline Chemical Compounds containing 60% sodium chloride and 40% calcium chloride.

This combination allows for strong conductivity between the electrode and the ground, enabling high fault currents to drain quickly and the structure to remain safe.

 

Essential Condition of CCPE:

• Efficiently dissipate heavy fault currents and electrical surges, both in magnitude and duration, to protect equipment being damaged and minimise downtime.

• Personnel working in the vicinity are protected from severe electric shock induced by "step potential" or "touch potential."

 

Features of Sound Earthing System for CCPE:

• Excellent electrical conductivity, low resistance and electrical impedance, and conductors of an adequate size capable of withstanding high fault currents without fusing or mechanical deterioration.

• Lower earth resistance ensures that energy is dissipated into the ground. The lower the earth circuit impedance, the more probable high-frequency lightning impulses will pass down the ground electrode path, rather than through any other.

• Because the majority of the grounding system will be buried in the earth mass for many years the material used for grounding conductors, electrodes, and connections are critical. For this purpose, high hot-dipped galvanised electrodes should be utilised. They should be mechanically robust and reliable, and they should not require any maintenance.

 

Standards for CCPE:

• IS: 3043/1987 Earthing Practice Code

• IEC 62561-7 Earthing improvement compound necessity

• IEEE-80- 2000 IEEE Guide for Safety in AC Sub Station Grounding

 

Advantages of CCPE:

• The electrode is coated in copper, which makes it extremely conductive and lowers the risk of corrosion.

• It can withstand strong fault currents, extending its service life and lowering maintenance expenses.

• The pipe earthing is a small unit that may be mounted extremely close to the equipment, only 2-5 metres away.

• Fewer fluctuations of ohmic values and current.
